Airlines in Transition: Accelerated Change
Today, change really can’t be avoided, given the industry’s parlous financial position, the many manifestations of COVID yet to come, and the impact of environmental pressures. There are also sweeping technological and operational revolutions under way, accelerated by these new forces.
The main drivers of an airline industry in transition will be the massive debt overhang, continued border uncertainty preventing financial recovery, the loss of business traffic, the role of lessors, the rise of the narrowbody LCC, and the financial impact of decarbonisation.
Once in a generation events come along to change the direction of the world.
Typically, the cause has been war, and war has meant many deaths. Unlike at the end of war, there will be no conclusive armistice to the pandemic; but it will be our challenge to create new beginnings in much the same way.
It’s too early yet to judge how extensive the industry impact will be over the medium term, although it is already clear that the pandemic will have long tendrils, economically and socially.
None of us will ever be quite the same again. That’s especially true of the airline industry – an industry undergoing accelerated transition.
